Weymouth Quayside Regeneration: A Multi-Product Security Solution for Knights Brown

Project Overview

New Forest Fencing was appointed by Knights Brown to deliver a comprehensive suite of fencing, automated access, and bespoke steelwork for the high-profile regeneration of Weymouth Quayside. The project required a delicate balance: providing industrial-grade security for a working fisherman’s quay while ensuring a safe, attractive public realm for residents and boat-users.

The Challenge: High-Traffic Safety in a Marine Environment

The brief demanded a dependable, Tier 1 sub-contractor capable of managing a complex multi-product specification.

Key challenges included:

  • Public Safety: Protecting pedestrians in a high-traffic quayside area.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Specifying finishes capable of withstanding harsh coastal salt spray.

  • Integration: Coordinating automated vehicle access with existing site security and high-voltage infrastructure

The Solution: Marine-Grade Steelwork and Automated Access

We utilised our in-house manufacturing capabilities to provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ solution, reducing the management burden for the Principal Contractor and Project Managers.

1. Public Realm & Pedestrian Safety: We installed over 500m of Class 1 crowd-rated tubular hand-rail. To ensure longevity in the marine environment, the steel was hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 and finished with a marine-grade black powder coating. This ensures the quay remains a “safe and attractive” environment for years to come.

2. Industrial Quay Security: For the Fisherman’s Quay, we provided 200m of 3m high steel palisade fencing. This was integrated with bespoke cantilever sliding gates, chosen for their space-saving design and reliability in high-use industrial settings.

3. Car-park & Perimeter Protection:

  • Duo Mesh Fencing: 300m of 868 Duo Mesh fencing (galvanised and powder-coated) provided a sleek, climb-resistant perimeter for the car parking areas.

  • Automated Access: We installed two pairs of 868 Duo Mesh automated vehicle gates, fully integrated with intercom systems for secure, remote access control.

  • Safety Barriers: 80m of Armco crash barriers were installed to protect the new infrastructure from vehicle impact.

4. Bespoke Steel Fabrication: A unique requirement of the site involved protecting a high-voltage electrical unit. We manufactured and installed a bespoke steel exterior staircase and specialised tubular clamp railing to allow for safe maintenance access while maintaining total site security.

The Result: A Safe Pair of Hands for Complex Infrastructure

By choosing a Constructionline Gold accredited partner, Knights Brown benefited from a snag-free installation delivered on-spec and on-budget. Every automated gate was force-tested to Gate Safe standards, ensuring full legal compliance before handover.

This project perfectly illustrates the advantage of working with a heritage specialist: the ability to handle diverse technical requirements—from bespoke fabrication to automated gate safety—under a single, accountable management team.
